Abstract : The object of the present study was to compare abnormal serum canine pancreas-specific lipase results and pancreatic ultrasonographic findings in dogs with pancreatitis. Pancreatitis is a common disease in dogs that is difficult to diagnose. The noninvasive diagnostic procedures, including a serum canine pancreatic-specific lipase (cPL) test and ultrasonographic changes in the pancreas, can be considered for the diagnosis of canine pancreatitis in clinical practice. A retrospective study was performed to assess pancreatitis in dogs. Forty client-owned dogs were suspected to have pancreatitis, which was confirmed by abnormal serum SNAP cPL results. Abdominal ultrasound examinations were also performed. The present study investigated the distribution of clinical signs associated with pancreatitis, and the dogs were divided into two groups: group 1 (clinical signs compatible with pancreatitis; n = 30) and group 2 (no clinical signs; n = 10). Based on this study, an abnormal result on the SNAP cPL assay can still present as a normal pancreas through an ultrasonographic examination, and a normal health status can identify the status of pancreatic ultrasonographic abnormal lesions. Therefore, for dogs with suspected pancreatitis, it is important to repeat an ultrasonographic evaluation. There is no significant difference between clinical symptoms and ultrasonographic changes in the pancreas.

Abstract : Use of ketamine and propofol combination (so-called Ketofol) anesthesiain a fixed ratio (1:1 mg/ml) was reported in dogs. The use of ketofol reduced cardiovascular suppression, but respiratory-related side effects was not significantly different from propofol alone. In this study, we evaluated the quality of ketofol anesthesia and changes in cardiopulmonary function according to the ratio of ketamine to propofol. The experimental groups were divided into three groups: propofol alone (P group), 3:7 ketofol group (PK1 group) and 1:1 ketofol group (PK2). For each group, the dose of 0.8 ml/kgwas administered intravenously at a constant rate until the tracheal intubation was possible and anesthesia was maintained with isoflurane for 120 minutes after induction of anesthesia. There was no significant difference in the anesthetic quality among three groups. Also, there was no difference in respiratory rate, tidal volume, end-tidal carbondioxide, and oxygen saturation. In group P, heart rate was not changed significantly during anesthesia, but arterial blood pressure decreased, while heart rate and arterial blood pressure increased significantly in group PK2. In the PK1 group, heart rate and arterial blood pressure during anesthesia remained similar to pre-anesthetic values. In conclusion, ketofol might be used as induction agent, and 3:7 ratioof ketofol showed more safe and effective anesthetic effect in dogs. Additionally, 1:1 ketofol may be used in patients with severe bradycardia orhypotension with close monitoring during anesthesia.

Abstract : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the concurrent validity of the double meter inclinometer (DMI) for passive joint range of motion (ROM) in beagle dogs and to compare these results to a universal plastic goniometer (UPG). Fifteen beagle dogs were recruited for this study. Joint ROM was evaluated twice with each device to calculate the intraobserver reliability. The intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) values of the UPG were good to excellent (> 0.75) for all joint ROM tests. Similar results were obtained with the DMI. The ICC values of the DMI were good to excellent (> 0.75) except in extension of the tarsal joint (ICC = 0.69). The majority of the ICC results between each device were poor (< 0.50) with the exception of six joints. Our findings suggest that the inclinometer can be used for passive joint ROM in veterinary medicine. However, caution should be taken when comparing measured values of passive joint ROM obtained utilizing both the DMI and UPG.

Abstract : Modified rush ASIT protocol has been performed to identify the ideal schedule that allows the dose considered effective to be reached in the shortest possible time with the fewest adverse effects. Ten atopic dogs of this study includes fulfillment of Favrot's criteria. Offending allergens were identified by the use of IDST. During the induction period, the dogs were received a total of 15 injections. Ten injections were administrated every 30 minutes in a day with gradually increasing amounts and concentrations of allergens, and the last 5 injections were administered every 3 days. Disease severity was quantified by using the canine atopic dermatitis extent and severity index (CADESI). During induction period, reduction rate from baseline scores varied between 1% and 67% and the improvement of ${geq}50%$ was recorded after induction period of therapy for CADESI-03 score in 6 of the 10 dogs. This study of ten dogs with atopic dermatitis provide evidence for the efficacy and safety of modified rush ASIT for clinical improvement.

Abstract : The cutaneous microcirculation plays a role in various physiological processes and pathological conditions. Two non-invasive methods were used in this study to obtain reference values for cutaneous microcirculation in intact male beagles. Twenty intact male beagles were used. The experimental environments were standardized. Laser Doppler flowmetry was used to measure cutaneous blood flow, and an infrared thermometer was used to measure cutaneous temperature. The blood flow and temperature were measured from the right side of the subjects at 20 cutaneous sites. Based on the laser Doppler flowmetry, the region with the highest blood flow was the periocular region that with the lowest was the forelimb foot pad. In addition, the standard deviation of the chest wall was the highest while that of the periocular region was the lowest. For skin temperature, the inguinal region had the highest mean skin temperature and the forelimb foot pad had the lowest. The correlation coefficient between the two methods was 0.72. Similar to a previous study, the values derived from repeated measurements at the 20 regions are reproducible and can contribute to research. Compared to the results of a previous study, the temperatures of the two smallest skin regions were the same; however, no specific trend was observed. The correlation coefficient between the two methods was significantly comparable, and this good correlation can reduce their limitations and variables complementarily. In addition to possible use in human studies, accumulated resources on measurements of skin blood flow in the future will potentiate its use in the veterinary medicine field.

Abstract : Ketosis has become a very common and important metabolic disorder that causes substantial economic loss in modern dairy herds. We determined the risk factors for ketosis and associations with some blood metabolite concentrations in dairy cows. Blood from 475 Holstein cows on four dairy farms was collected weekly until 4 weeks after calving to measure blood β-hydroxybutyrate (BHBA) concentrations using electronic handheld meters. Cows were grouped based on the BHBA concentration into two groups: a ketosis group (

Abstract : The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial properties of chitosan silver nanocomposites (CAgNCs) using pathogenic Vibrio ichthyoenteri as a bacterial model. Results of agar disc diffusion and turbidimetric assays showed that CAgNCs could inhibit the growth of V. ichthyoenteri in concentration dependent manner. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) of CAgNCs were 75 and 125 μg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, CAgNCs treatment induced the reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in V. ichthyoenteri cells in concentration and time dependent manner, suggesting that it generates oxidative stress, leading to bacterial cell death. The field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) images of CAgNCs treated V. ichthyoenteri exhibited strong cell membrane damage than un-treated control bacteria. MTT assay results showed the highest cell viability (22%) at 75 μg/mL of CAgNCs treated bacteria samples. The results from this study suggest that CAgNCs is a potential antibacterial agent to control fish pathogenic bacteria.

Abstract : A 1.3 year-old Castrated male Bedlington terrier (10.0 kg of body weight) was presented with heart murmur and occasional coughing. Diagnostic imaging studies revealed supravalvular pulmonic stenosis (maximal velocity 2.91 m/s) from abnormal membranous structure (aperture) distal to the pulmonary valve in the main pulmonary artery. Further study also revealed pulmonic regurgitant (1.82 m/s of peak velocity, 13.2 mmHg of pressure gradient) jets started from the abnormal membranous structure. Since the dog had no obvious clinical signs related to heart failure, no interventional therapy including balloon dilation was considered in this case. Instead, medical treatment for preventing further deterioration of clinical signs related to PS was done with enalapril. This case report described a rare case of type III supravalvular PS in a dog, which has never been reported. Further deterioration of clinical signs has yet been recognized after medical treatment.

Abstract : A 1-year-old intact male Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was presented with a ruptured anal sac. On routine preanesthetic screening tests for surgical resection, the thrombocytopenia was observed by an impedance-type autoanalyzer. A peripheral blood smear was used as a follow-up test and giant platelets were seen on the smear. DNA assay of this patient confirmed that the cause of the platelet abnormalities in this patient was genetic mutation. To our knowledge, this is the first case report of macrothrombocytopenia confirmed based on the DNA assay results, in a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel in Korea.

Abstract : An 8-year old female Korean Short Hair cat with a history of paralysis of both hind limbs less than 1 hour before admission was referred. On physical examination, the left hind limb was cold and there was no pulsation or mobility. On abdominal ultrasound examination, a thrombus 8 mm in length was found at the aortic bifurcation. The patient was diagnosed with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and cardiogenic pulmonary edema through radiologic evaluation and echocardiography. A tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was applied intravenously using an accelerated dosing protocol (1 mg administered intravenously [IV] bolus, 2.5 mg IV over 30 min, 1.5 mg IV over 1 h) to treat the feline arterial thromboembolism. Within 12 h after administration of tPA, pulsation and mobility of both hind limbs were normal, without any noticeable complications. Clopidogrel was prescribed to prevent additional thrombus formation, and pimobendan, benazepril, and furosemide were prescribed for administration at home. The patient was discharged and survived 377 days.
